The University of Greenwich is the second engineering college founded in the United Kingdom, established in 1890 and located in London. Its predecessor was Woolwich Institute of Technology and Royal Naval College, built near the site of the 18th century Royal Arsenal. In the early 1990s, Woolwich Institute of Technology, along with a large number of comprehensive engineering colleges in the UK, was approved by the UK government to be upgraded to a university, becoming one of over 90 formal universities. According to the latest 2023 World University Rankings, the University of Greenwich has entered the top 100 of THE World University Impact Rankings for the first time. In the 2023 UK University Student Satisfaction Rankings, it ranks first in the UK.
